The Pomeranian (also known as Pomeranian Spitz, Dwarf Spitz, or popularly called Mini Pomeranian) is famous worldwide for its fluffy teddy bear appearance. Many owners in Italy often confuse it or associate it with the Volpino Italiano, but both breeds share a fundamental characteristic: the need for rigorous dermatological care.
What happens when this splendid coat begins to thin without an apparent cause? In most cases, the answer is a dreaded but manageable condition.
The truth about the pathology: what is Alopecia X?
Let's get straight to the point to understand the nature of this problem: Alopecia X is a dermatological disease that primarily affects Nordic and Spitz breed dogs, with a very high predisposition in the Pomeranian.
It is defined with the letter "X" because, from a scientific point of view, the exact causes still remain a mystery (it is not linked to parasites or common fungal infections). It is a disorder of the hair growth cycle that causes atrophy of the hair follicle: in simple words, the hair falls out and the follicle "falls asleep", preventing the growth of new hair.
How does it affect your Mini Pomeranian or Volpino?
Symptoms may vary, but they almost always follow the same pattern in the Pomeranian:
-
Symmetrical hair loss: Hair begins to fall out on the trunk, flanks, and hind thighs. The head and paws are usually not affected.
-
Change in texture: The shiny coat disappears, giving way to a dry, dull, wool-like undercoat.
-
Hyperpigmentation: The skin exposed to air and sun, lacking its natural protection, tends to become dark or even black (hence the alternative name Black Skin Disease).
Important note: If you have a Volpino Italiano or a similar dog and notice these symptoms after a short clipping with clippers, you may be facing clipping alopecia (Post-Clipping Alopecia), closely related to Alopecia X.
How to stimulate regrowth with Volpier care
Although Alopecia X is a dermatological disease that aesthetically affects the dog, it is not a painful or internal disease. This means that we can fight it and educate the skin to regenerate from the outside.
The Volpier Italia product line has been developed specifically for the needs of delicate breeds like the Mini Pomeranian. To reverse the process, the skin needs active components capable of penetrating the follicle:
-
Intensive Hydration: Volpier shampoos and lotions restore elasticity to dry and hardened skin, creating the perfect environment for regrowth.
-
Follicle Reactivation: The exclusive nutrients in our formulas help to "wake up" dormant hair follicles.
-
Protective Barrier: Protects the exposed skin of your Pomeranian from external aggressions while the coat regenerates.
